Kurds in Berlin solidarize with hunger striking activists

Around 100 Kurds took part in a demonstration in Berlin. They showed solidarity with various Kurdish activists and politicians, including HDP member of parliament Leyla Güven, who went on an unlimited hunger strike in November last year.

However, the train stopped after about 150 meters, after the police prohibited a banner on which the portrait of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan could be seen.

Background is a hunger strike of hundreds of Kurdish prisoners to improve the prison conditions of Abdullah Öcalan. The Turkish government is accused of keeping him in solitary confinement and of denying him visits. The hunger strike began in November last year, and some prisoners are said to be in critical health.

About 1,000 Kurds marched in Berlin Kreuzberg to protest against the attacks on northern-Syrian Afrin (Efrin) by the Turkish Forces and its allied militias. During the emotional march clashes broke out when a Turkish nationalist waved a flag of Turkey out of a window at the route of the march. Stones and bottles were thrown at the nationalist. Police interfered and arrested several Kurdish activists. After a short sit-in the march went on and arrived then peaceful the end of the route.

About 250 Kurds gathered a march in Berlin's western inner city to celebrate the Kurdish Newroz.

Due a recent ban by the German Federal Ministry for Internal Affairs no YPG and YPJ flags were shown. But some flags with the also banned Portrait of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan could be seen.
