Thousands at Seebrücke protest in Berlin for open borders

Several thousand people took part in a demonstration in Berlin called by the Seebrücke alliance.

The participants demanded open borders and safe escape routes for refugees. They criticized the policy of sealing off the European Union, as well as massive attacks on refugees in Greece by right-wing radicals and the police.

The background is the recent opening of the border in Turkey and the policy of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogans to bring refugees from Turkey to the border with Greece by bus.

There, people are stranded in no man's land after Greece has refused them entry to the EU using force. At the same time, there have been massive attacks by right-wing extremists on fugitives, NGOs and journalists, which the Greek police have not stopped.

Several hundred people take part in a rally in front of the Foreign Office in Berlin, followed by a demonstration to the Bundestag for the reception of under-age refugees. The protest was organized by the alliance "Seebrücke Berlin" under the motto "We have room!

The opening rally was joined by several hundred people who protested in a rally against the election of the Thuringian Minister President Kemmerisch (FDP) with the help of the right-wing radical AfD.

The background is that thousands of refugees are stranded in Greek refugee camps, where they live under deeply inhumane conditions. About one third of the people there are minors.

A broad alliance of organisations, including "Family Life for All", had called for a protest.

Background is the still restrictive handling of family reunification for fugitives, especially for those with subsidiary status, by the Federal Government. In addition, there are bureaucratic hurdles that make it more difficult to follow, even if this is legally required.

About 100 people gathered in front of the Federal Chancellery in Berlin to protest against the government's rigid asylum policy. They demanded the reception of 32 people who are currently on the rescue ship "Seawatch 3". Although several German cities, including Berlin, had already promised to accept them, the Federal Ministry of the Interior under Horst Seehofer (CSU) continued to delay a solution.

The participants demanded safe passages for refugees as well as compliance with international maritime law and European value standards.

The rally was organised by the Seebrücke.
