Demonstration in Berlin to commemorate the beginning of the first Chechen war in 1994

A few dozen mainly Chechens gather on Pariser Platz in Berlin to commemorate the beginning of the so-called first Chechen war on 11.12.1994.

After Chechnya declared its independence in November 1994, the military invasion of the former Soviet Republic by Russian troops began a few weeks later. Around 80,000 people died and it is said that the Russian troops committed serious violations of human rights.

Around 80 people are taking part in a demonstration in Berlin to draw attention to the continuing persecution of homosexuals in Chechnya.

The demonstration passes the Russian embassy, where an intermediate rally is held, and ends in front of the Reichstag.

The background to this is the reports that have been going on for two years that homosexuals are regularly subjected to persecution, torture and murder in the Russian republic.

The demonstration will take place on the Day of Remembrance for Homosexual Persecuted Persecutees under National Socialism.

Hundreds participate a march in Berlin against murder of queer people in Chechnya. Allegedly upt to 100 persons were killed by or with the knowledge of state authorities in the partial republic of Russia.

The march leads from the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Embassy of Russia. Among the speakers was Volker Beck, MP (Green Party).
