The last general secretary of former GDR state party SED Egon Krenz gives a speech when about 200 mostly elder communists remember the 70th anniversary of the murder of Germany’s communist leader Ernst Thälmann in Berlin.Thälmann led the German communist party in the twenties and beginning thirties until he was arrested by the NS-regime. Eleven years later he was shot at the concentration camp Buchenwald in August 1944.
At Thälmann’s memorial in the former eastern part of Berlin red flags from communists organizations waved also as the flag from former GDR and its state youth organization FDJ (Freie Deutsche Jugend/Free German Youth). Even pictures of Joseph Stalin were shown at a stand. 08/23/2014.
